Lean Construction is a new way to think about the management work in projects. It enables companies to create processes that have as little waste and interruption as possible. You will also learn about the Last Planner® System (LPS) which creates more reliable project delivery, significantly safer sites and much shorter production schedules (20% shorter is common). Developed specifically to help deliver more predictable production in building, infrastructure and engineering construction and design, Last Planner is now used in many other project-based production environments such as defence, ship-building and repair, software engineering and aircraft maintenance as well as for shutdown maintenance in bio-tech, pharma and chemical engineering.
Using project simulations and real life examples we will introduce you to these new ways of thinking and the key underlying principles. You will learn about the benefits of transforming your project and organisation, and how to get started. Beginning with a brief history of lean construction and Last Planner we will:
- review the coherent set of contracting, organisational and project management practices that underpin the way that most design and construction work gets done today, and look at the alternative practices used by lean practitioners
- learn the key principles that underpin lean construction
- review problems with the way production is managed on many projects currently
- see some results of lean thinking in construction
- explore the effects of variation on workflow in production - with a short simulation
- look at how LPS actively manages production and handles variation.
