Organisations are under increasing pressure to revolutionise business efficiency and the use of sustainable technologies through effective environmental management. As a result, there is an increasing demand for Masters-level graduates with the skills and knowledge to implement environmental management systems in line with international standards such as ISO 14001 and EMAS.
This course was developed by Nottingham Trent University in collaboration with Loreus Ltd, an experienced environmental training and consultancy company. This joint venture will ensure that the course delivers leading edge theoretical content underpinned by practical consultancy experience.

Although you will study much of the course by distance learning, it is important that you feel part of a coherent group and that you meet others on the course as well as your academic and commercial tutors. This is one of the reasons why the practical resource management module will be delivered as a seven-day intensive residential course. This method of delivery has also been chosen because it is the most efficient use of time for those in work or studying abroad.
ModulesIEMA Approved Associate Certificate Course in
Environmental Management (UK)*
This module will give you the background required to understand the
Earth’s natural systems and resources and how they can bemanaged.
It also gives the legal framework for protecting the environment
and managing environmental improvement.
*By successfully completing this module you will be entitled to an additional professional qualification.
Environmental Management Systems (ISO
14001)
This module will provide you with the theoretical skills needed to
develop, implement and operate an environmental management system
(EMS) conforming to the international EMS standard ISO 14001.
Practical Resource Management
This module enables you to apply the theoretical knowledge you
gained in the previous two modules to real-life situations and will
commence with a seven-day residential course.
Research Project
The research project is an opportunity for you to investigate a
current topic in Environmental Management.
Assessment
The taught modules are assessed by a variety of different types of
coursework. The Research Project module will involve the design,
implementation and reporting of a major research task. There are no
formal examinations involved although there are periodic tests in
the modules, Associate Certificate Course in Environmental
Management and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001).
How do you study?
You will use a state-of-the-art and easy to use e-learning system,
supported by an email helpline, as well as case studies and tests
designed to check your understanding of the concepts involved in
this subject. Although you will study much of the course by
distance learning, we believe that it is important for you to feel
part of a coherent group, and to meet your fellow students as well
as your academic and commercial tutors. You will be able to do this
during the seven-day intensive residential course which forms part
of the Practical Resource Management module.
Some students may prefer to take a shorter programme of study. If you take all three taught modules and a shortened research project, you will be eligible for a PG Diploma in Environmental Management. If you simply wish to take the taught modules without completing a research project, you will be eligible for a PG Certificate in Environmental Management.
