This course demands a high level of commitment and application for the full syllabus to be covered in one year, and a great deal of work is to be done independently. What qualifications or skills do I require to study this course?

The course is very intensive and is of a revision nature. You should have prior knowledge of the syllabus, having studied GCSE Mathematics recently and achieved a grade D. If your previous study was either a long time ago, or at a lower level of achievement, you may need to take a Numeracy course organised by the Skills for Life department first.

What does the course involve?

The course follows the Edexcel GCSE Mathematic modular syllabus. The following topics are covered: • Number: decimals, fractions, standard form, rounding, ratio and proportion, percentages. • Algebra: Evaluation of formulae, solution of linear, simultaneous and quadratic equations, factorisation, functions and graphs. • Shape and Space: Angles, triangles, Pythagoras’ Theorem, trig ratios, 2-D and 3-D shapes, and measurement. • Handling Data: Data collection, statistical measures, cumulative frequency and probability. • Using and Applying Mathematics: Problem solving, number patterns, communication of mathematics and developing reasoning. Assessment is by three written exams, one in March and two in June – one paper will be answered without the use of a calculator.

What option will be open to me if I successfully complete the course? A GCSE Mathematics Grade C is a minimum starting qualification required by many employers and for entry to some further and higher education courses. GCSE Mathematics Grade B is required to study Mathematics and some Science subjects at ‘AS’ Level and ‘A’ Level.
