Is this course for me?

What qualifications or skills do I require to study this course?

You will need at least one A-level GCE (grade C or above) in an art or design subject and a good portfolio of art and design work. Similar art and design qualifications will also be considered including AS-level, AVCE, National Diploma, OCN and Access. You would also normally possess at least five GCSE’s (grades A-C) including English and Mathematics.

What does the course involve?

The Foundation Diploma is a programme of study that aims to progressively develop your creative skills throughout the course. You are encouraged to work across traditional subject boundaries as you increasingly pursue your own interests and ideas.

Stage one (level 3) consists of an accelerated programme of short activities designed to establish an essential visual grammar, and delivered through a wide range of disciplines and media.
Stage two (levels 3 or 4) enables you to develop your practice within the context of a more focused area of study. It is within this stage that you will prepare a portfolio of work in anticipation of progression to university.
Stage three (level 4) is the Final Major Project during which you will be expected to take full responsibility for the direction of your work and you will be required to produce a body of work independently.

Contextual Studies underpins all creative activities throughout the course. This will introduce you to many contemporary and historical practitioners in art and design; other art forms including film, music, drama, literature, dance and poetry; historical periods, events, and influential people; plus general social and cultural issues. Contextual Studies is delivered through studio-based activities in addition to regular visits to exhibitions, museums, galleries and performances.

What option will be open to me if I successfully complete the course? Our students have progressed to some of the most prestigious university degree courses in the country to study a wide range of subjects including painting, sculpture, illustration, visual communication, set design, fashion, textiles, games design, film, animation, furniture, jewellery, photography, conservation and restoration, and history of art.
