  • To provide a sound ethical and anti-discriminatory framework for helping practice, in accordance with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy Code of Practice for users of counselling skills.
  • To provide the opportunity to learn the competent and professional use of counselling skills by use of role-play, video, voluntary practice and other means
  • To introduce the psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural models of emotional distress, with particular reference to Freud, Klein, Jung, Beck and Ellis

This nationally recognised qualification is designed for you if you want to develop competence in the use of counselling skills. Although the course does not qualify you as a professional counseller, it serves as a foundation level training if you want to proceed to formal counselling training at either Nescot or elsewhere. The course includes an experiental group (weekly) and residential block (early March). Both the psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural models of emotional distress are addressed on this course.

From time to time visiting speakers are invited to present seminars on various aspects of helping practice, such as bereavement, trans-cultural practice and humanistic counselling practice. As part of the course you will be required to complete 40 hours of helping practice either in connection with your occupational role or in a voluntary setting. It must be emphasised that it is your responsibility to find such a placement.

Assessment

40 hours of helping practice, three discussion papers, role play by video, skills assessment and evaluation of skills assessment.

Career Progression:

Counselling training at Diploma level (subject to interview).
