GCSE Sociology (level 2)

The course is designed to enable you to:

· Develop a wide range of knowledge and understanding about society, and how sociologists study and understand its structures, processes and issues

· Take a questioning approach to evidence and issues, developing your critical and evaluative skills

Is it for me?

Sociology is exciting, interesting and relevant to students’ lives. This course will be well suited for students who enjoy sharing ideas with others and enjoy group activities in class. This course has been developed to enable a smooth progression to AS and A Level Sociology.

What’s involved?

In the first unit you will study society, families & households and education. You will look at a wide range of issues from these key sociological areas including: how and why families are changing, do we still need families and is the education system fair?

In the second unit you will study crime and deviance, mass media, social inequality and power. You will study a variety of issues, including who controls the media and why there is an unequal distribution of power and wealth in society. Successful completion of this unit and unit one will allow the students to achieve the full GCSE qualification in Sociology.

The assessment for this qualification is all exam based. The first unit will be examined in January and will count towards 50% of the overall GCSE. The second unit will be examined in June and will count towards the final 50% of the GCSE qualification.

Entry Requirements:

A range of GCSEs at grades D/E and above.

Which courses go well with this?

This course can be taken as part of a GCSE resit programme.

Progression:

Students who complete the GCSE Sociology will normally progress to the AS and A Level Sociology courses.
