The BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Law (1 year) is equivalent to an AS Level. The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (2 years) is equivalent to an A level.

What’s involved?

The Subsidiary Diploma course is made up of six units – three Core Units studied in year 1 and three Specialist Units in year 2. The Specialist Units enable you to study particular legal areas in depth. Each unit is assessed solely by assignments.

Certificate and Subsidiary Diploma

The three Core Units are:

· Dispute Solving in the Legal System

· Understanding Law Making

· Aspects of Legal Liability

Subsidiary Diploma only

The three Specialist Units are:

· Unlawful Homicide and Police Powers

· Aspects of Property Offences and Police Powers

· One of Contract Law/Consumer Law/Aspects of the Law of Tort/Aspects of Employment Law/Aspects of Family Law

Understanding Law Making

This unit introduces you to the doctrine of precedent, Acts of Parliament, delegated legislation, statutory interpretation and European Union law.

Dispute Solving in the Legal System

The aim of this unit is to give you an understanding of the difference between civil and criminal law, how this decides which courts resolve disputes in the legal system; the personnel, both lawyers and lay people, involved in the resolution process; together with a knowledge of the financing of advice and representation; and alternatives to the courts.

Aspects of Legal Liability

The aim of this unit is to introduce you to the tort of negligence and the principles of criminal liability, together with knowledge of damages and the aims of sentencing.

Unlawful Homicide and Police Powers

The aim of this unit is to give you the skills to apply the law on murder, an understanding of the law on manslaughter, together with knowledge of police powers with respect to arrest and detention.

Aspects of Property Offences and Police Powers

The aim of this unit is to give you knowledge, understanding and skills in the law relating to property offences, fraud, criminal damage, and police search powers.

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C with at least one of these in English Language.

Which courses go well with this?

This course combines well with a wide range of other advanced level courses. For those interested in a career in Business/Accountancy it could be combined with e.g. Business, Accountancy, ICT. For those interested in Criminology/Social Work it could be combined with e.g. Psychology, Sociology.

Progression:

The objective of the course is to introduce you to the world of legal work. It is ideal for those considering a career in the legal profession or related fields such as the police, prison service, social services or business. It is an excellent preparation for Higher Education and is also a nationally recognised qualification in its own right, so has value for those with other careers in mind.
