PTLLS is an introduction to teaching course and on completion of
this section of the course the student will acquire a threshold
licence to teach adults. This is generally suitable for those
teaching non-accredited/certified qualifications, or from home. It
is a stepping stone to teaching as there are no teaching hours
required for this course.
The CELTA courses are designed as initial training courses for
those with little or no previous experience of teaching
languages.
Students are specifically helped to:
- Develop an awareness of language and a knowledge of the English language, and to apply these professionally
- Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English
- Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom
- Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English
- Develop an awareness of teaching in FE and the legislation governing working in the sector
- Develop an understanding of how to embed functional skills (literacy, numeracy & ICT) in teaching ESOL
The course includes a fair balance of language awareness and
input. The emphasis throughout is on student participation, not on
traditional 'lecturing'.
It is the awarding body for the course the student will be teaching
that determines the level of teaching qualification needed, so if
the student is in doubt they need to be referred to their manager
or their awarding body.
Students must have ALL of the following:
- Aged at least 18 years old at the start of the course
- A standard of education which would allow them to enter Higher Education, this is a MINIMUM requirement (ie. 2 A Levels or equivalent)
- A good level of language awareness, a sound grasp of grammatical terminology and a competence in both spoken and written English to allow the student to follow the course and complete the assignments
- The potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching
If you have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 3
or equivalent in your subject area and relevant work experience in
your vocational or technical area, you can apply.
If you are not sure, we can assess your qualification and advise
you if it is equivalent to NVQ Level 3.
Students will have to pass an on-line literacy and numeracy test at
level 2 and show level 2 competency in ICT, complete a written
assignment and pass CELTA to be awarded a PTLLS certificate.
