Student & Entry Requirements:

Suits self-motivated learners who do not wish to take an assessment-based course but who are willing to work on a practical level both in the classroom and in their own time.

Learners must have a SLR Film or Digital Camera in good working condition available from the first lesson.  It is hoped that the learner will have basic camera handling skills i.e can switch their camera on and off, focus and use it on basic Auto Programme mode.  A totally Manual SLR camera is not suitable.

General & First Session:

  • A Single Lens Reflex camera.
  • Note pad and pen.

Learners must have a SLR Film or Digital Camera in good working condition available from the first lesson.  Any entry level Digital SLR Camera is acceptable, tut preferably a Nikon or Canon. Suggestion would be Nikon a D40 or D60 or a Canon 400D.  A totally Manual SLR camera is not suitable.

The learner must have basic camera handling skills i.e can switch their camera on and off, focus and use it on basic Auto Programme mode.  The learner must also have read and be very familiar with the contents of his/her camera manual (the tutor will not be teaching the learner about his/her individual camera).

KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective:

For the learner to gain an overall awareness of camera-handling techniques in order to control and make purposeful creative photographic images rather than straight recordings.

Raise visual awareness and the creative potential of the photographic medium.

At the end of the course the learner should be able to:

  • Use the camera with greater confidence and operate a SLR camera in programme and manual modes.
  • Raise visual awareness and a better understanding of photography now and from its inception.
  • Produce well-composed pictures of a range of subjects which reflect their own individual character and needs.
  • Develop a long term pleasure for the medium and its potential for a life-long learning.

Assessment:

An informal assessment of the learners work presented in a portfolio at the end of the course.

We will recognise and record your progress and achievement through attainment of the following goals.

  • Understand main camera controls & functions and apply them to produce the right results
  • Understand & apply camera exposure & metering modes to achieve creative results
  • Understand the basics of good composition
  • Understand the different types of digital image files, how to manage them and how to present their work to best effect.
  • Understand and apply the appropriate visual risk assessments and the Health & Safety skills and knowledge required to carry out activities related to this course.
  • Your own negotiated aims and objectives.
