Description

Develop the techniques of oil painting.  Unravel some of the mysteries of the Old and Modern Masters.  The course covers colour-mixing and textured and coloured grounds in a variety of subjects, including still life, landscapes, buildings and figures.  Topics and projects are given for you to complete.  Help to build a file of notes for future use.

Additional costs may be incurred for any visits arranged to Exhibitions/Art Galleries.

Learner & Entry Requirements:

Some basic experience of oil painting may be helpful.

If you have any of the following items, please bring them but do not purchase them specifically for the course until after the first class.  KAE is unable to offer refunds for any material, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.  You are expected to bring your own equipment after guidance from the Tutor - a list of materials is supplied and discussed at the first class.

  • An A2 sketch pad of cartridge paper
  • Selection of pencils eg. Hb, 2b and 6b
  • A kneadable putty rubber

Course Aim & Objective: 

The course is designed to cover both basic and more advanced techniques in a variety of subjects to give you a thorough grounding in the skills and methods of oil-painting, both modern and traditional.  Learn and practise using oil materials correctly and develop skills in mixing colours and using tonal under-painting, still life, abstract and landscape composition.  Develop versatility in using oils in different ways to gain confidence and work independently in a group with tutor support.

Assessment:

  • Continuous assessment of work produced, through discussion with tutor/fellow learners
  • Individual discussion with tutor and self-assessment
  • Through projects and assignments set
  • Homework is mainly preparing and developing resources for topics and practising skills

On this course you will be develop the following skills and knowledge:

  • Producing paintings from observation
  • Painting using light, medium and dark tones
  • Understanding of composition
  • Understanding of perspective
  • Develop basic techniques and methods of oil painting
