Description

Work towards the GCSE examination in May or early June.  At the end of the academic year, you should be able to talk and write competently about the various practical topic areas covered during the year.  This course aims to give learners the confidence to perform in French using their four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, in order to succeed and achieve a good grade in their GCSE exam.  This is done through consolidation tasks covering all topics required by the exam board.

Examination costs are included in published course fees.

Learner & Entry Requirement: 

Learners should have achieved Level 2 French.

If you have the book "Façon de parler 2" (green) by Hodder & Stoughton, Angela Aries & Dominique Debney please bring it but do not purchase it specifically for the course until after the first class.

Course Aim & Objective: 

The aim of this course is to help learners develop their skills in French in order to get the best grade in GCSE exam.  By the end of the course each learner should be able to achieve the grade according to his or her ability.  Learners should also have the experience to develop and consolidate their previous knowledge in order to perform and express themselves in the French language in a more confident way.

Assessment: 

The Edexcel French GCSE Examination.  All coursework will be based on the exam syllabus.

Formative assessment is continuously considered through question/answer sessions.  Worksheets of various tasks are used during class and as homework.  A wide range of assessment methods and activities are used, looking at the four areas of language (speaking and writing; listening and reading).  These are marked in class and alternatively by the tutor with a clear feedback.

Assessment tasks are prepared for completion at the end of each topic and marked by the tutor.

Progression: 

Learners could take the AS level French at KAE.  Please ask at the centre office for details.

Course Syllabus:

We will follow the guidelines of the Edexcel GCSE syllabus, but adapt it to adult's needs and interests by using a course book and a variety of material.

The course will use the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing), but more emphasis will be put on speaking and listening during the lesson time while reading and writing will be mainly practiced at home with guidance from the teacher.

The grammar will cover most simple tense: the present; the immediate future; the perfect; the imperfect; the future and the conditional present

The different topics to be covered are:

  • Self, family and friends: Introduction; Self, family and pets;  possessive adjectives; Greetings;  welcome visitors; Revision of regular verbs in ER, IR and RE and verbs in the present tense
  • Interests and Hobbies: State leisure activities and express preferences; comparisons plus/moins/aussi, que
  • Home & local environment: Description of home; prepositions indicating position (près de, loin de, à côté de, etc.); depuis + present tense; countries and nationalities; home town & local areas; expressing differences; relative pronouns QUI, QUE; Students describe their town and express their likes and dislikes (aimer, préférer, aimer mieux); superlative le plus/le moins
  • Daily routine & the working world: Reflexive verbs in the present tense; Meals at home and at work; partitive articles; description of jobs
  • Travel, Transport & finding the way: Directions- Imperative; modes of transport en voiture, en avion, en vélo etc; buying tickets
  • Tourism: Holiday – past, present and future; immediate future and future; describing countries including climate en, au, aux; customs; festivals; specialities
  • Accommodation: Booking a room in a hotel; imperfect, giving a phone call
  • Eating out: Ordering a meal at the restaurant; food and drink
  • The world of work: indirect speech, talking about one's work and the working world
  • The weather and the world around us: geographical surroundings, environmental issues (pollution)
  • Shopping and clothes: demonstrative adjectives; interrogative pronouns; revision of possessive pronouns
  • Health, fitness and social activities: prepositions, free time, special occasions, money matters, common ailments and health issues.
