Not keeping up with your children/grandchildren when they are on the computer? Learn the basics of Word Processing and E-mail. Absolute beginners are taught at a gentle pace in a relaxed atmosphere. Concession fees are available for those enrolling in person with evidence of benefit at any KAE centre.

Learner & Entry Requirements:

As this is an entry-level course, no prior computer or keyboard knowledge is assumed. You must be new to learning IT and have not enrolled on a computer course before. Some simple homework to consolidate work covered in class may be set but access to a computer is not required.

If you have folders for course notes, pen and paper, please bring them but do not purchase them specifically for the course until after the first class. KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the class is susequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective:

To give you an introduction to computers and allow you to learn some of the basics of Word Processing. How to search the Internet and how to send and receive E-mails. Use the computer to prepare simple documents, save, retrieve and print files.

Assessment:

Plenty of practical work on the computer throughout the course. Assessment of learning via printouts of completed exercises and observation within the class.

Progression:

Those who complete this course may wish to progress to the CLIK Improvers Course at Tolworth Library or a Level One course in the mainstream provision.

Course Syllabus:

  • The course covers the following items:
  • Understand what a computer is – hardware and software
  • Health & Safety
  • Computer terminology
  • How to use the mouse
  • Introduction to Word
  • Text input – shift key, spacebar, enter key, Wordwrap, deletion
  • Saving and printing documents
  • Formatting – bold, italics, underline and alignment, text font and size
  • Spellcheck
  • Using menus/toolbars
  • Introduction to cut and paste
  • How to type a letter
  • Internet – What is the Internet?
  • Getting online
  • Searching the Web
  • Internet – E-mail – send and receive E-mail
  • Where time allows, further functionality in Word such as Clip Art and WordArt may be covered.
