This 90 credit diploma is equivalent to 1.5 Alevels. The course includes a large amount of practical work giving students the opportunity and confidence to become suitably skilled for a career in the horticultural industry and is suitable for all ages. Students can progress to a 2nd year to develop and extend their knowledge , again equivalent to 1.5 A levels resulting in a qualification at the end of year 2 equivalent to 3 Alevels

Study garden design and landscape surveying., plant production and propagation techniques,principles of turf care, identification and selection of plants and the use of machinery The course provides a broad grounding in horticulture with a wide range of skills and background knowledge and an emphasis on practical knowledge.

Entry into second year of the Extended Diploma in Horticulture course is possible for those who successfully complete this programme.

Course Content

  • Plant propagation- glasshouse and nursery techniques
  • Garden design
  • Plant science
  • Decorative horticulture including plant establishment, pruning,
  • Horticulture productione.g vegetable production in polytunnels
  • Hard landscape construction
  • Horticultural machinery and operation
  • Turf culture
  • Plant knowledge and identification

One year, 3 days per week. Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction and industrial visits.
College Days - Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays (TBC)

Entry Requirements

Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work. Four GCSEs minimum Grade C or equivalent (including English Language and Maths), Level 2 Qualifications in related subjects are also suitable subject to tutor recommendation. Mature students will be considered even if they do not have the formal entry qualifications.
