PURPOSEThis programme will enable students to understand of the distribution of disease, health and life chances across different countries and regions and to critically to evaluate these statistics and their bases. In addition they will be able to understand the key social, economic and cultural factors that shape the nature of health and disease and which explain entrenched inequalities in the provision of health care worldwide. Students will explore the historical development of health care systems; critically examine key aspects of their current management, and assess the wider political environment in which they operate. They will identify and critically evaluate the social, ethical and economic implications of advances in contemporary biomedicine and health care interventions across different regions.

DESCRIPTIONThis interdisciplinary programme is designed for those seeking high level skills in the critical analysis of the social and political determinants of health inequalities in a global context, and will enable students to assess the politics, ethics and practices of the global health movement with special consideration of issues social justice, and to critically assess alternative approaches.

Taught within the world leading interdisciplinary department of Social Science, Health and Medicine, by faculty from across the social sciences, and drawing on the unrivalled strength of King’s in health and medicine, this programme combines critical analysis of the core issues pertaining to global health, social determinants of health inequities, and global social justice with the opportunity for advanced social science education in the critical analysis of issues of global health and inequity in specific fields such as psychiatry and mental health, ageing, war and trauma, access to pharmaceuticals, pandemics and biosecurity and the political economy of health.
