Health and social welfare law is becoming increasingly important. This course allows you to discover and assess the latest theories and current law which relate to it, all within the context of contemporary national, European and international human rights expectations. At the same time, you will develop critical evaluation skills that enable you to compare different approaches to these topics, and apply them to real life situations.

By focusing on Health and Social Welfare Law, this LLM provides a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding that opens up enhanced career choices in the area of the care, protection, and representation of those who are physically or mentally ill or suffering from a disability, children, elderly persons and other vulnerable persons. Your will gain an understanding of management and policy, and the relevant law, relating to these groups. The programme offers the opportunity to study the topic within its national, European and international context. Further flexibility is also available - this programme is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. In addition single modules may also be taken for CPD purposes. This course will develop your understanding of the contrasting approaches to legal issues. Further it will develop your analytical and theoretical skills through the study of law in its social, economic and political context, and also your capacity to conduct legal research, to analyse critically arguments, theories, concepts and evidence, and to communicate the fruits of such research and analysis clearly, literately and concisely. What's involved This course is studied over two years on a part-time basis. The mode of attendance will be two and a half days per week over the two years. You will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, LLM specialist seminars and independent study. Subjects studied include: Year 1 Medical Law and Ethics Disability, Mental Health Rights and the Law Two Masters level modules from a course-specific option pool * Year 2 Child Welfare and the Law Law and the Elderly Dissertation *Non-law entrants must study Legal Skills and Research Methods inYear 1 trimester 1, in place of a Business School Masters level module.

Requirements at a glanceEntry to the courseApplicants will normally be expected to hold an Honours (2.2) degree from a UK Institution. Applicants with an Ordinary degree with Distinction may also be admitted.It is not necessary, though desirable, to have a law degree or a degree with a substantial law component. Where the applicant has not studied law before, or has studied for a first degree with only a small law component, such an applicant being known hereafter as a "non-law entrant", the applicant will normally be required to undertake the "Legal Skills and Research" module as a compulsory part of their Programme.Applicants applying from another European country must have a qualification equivalent to 240 Credits under the European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS).
