Who is the course for?
This course is intended for anyone wishing to gain competence in reading French texts, and therefore especially aimed at students enrolled in Humanities and Social Science courses. No prior knowledge of French is required as the course is for complete beginners.
What are the objectives of the course?
To acquire basic language skills necessary to read a wide range of academic French texts with the aid of a dictionary.
To increase linguistic and cultural awareness.
To acquire strategies for independent learning.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- identify keywords and key expressions in a French text
- identify the subject matter and the general type of text
- use a dictionary more effectively
- use fundamental elements of French grammar and syntax
- use basic academic vocabulary in French
- pronounce clearly and read a French text fluently, even if a foreign accent is sometimes evident and occasional mispronunciations occur.
- read simple factual texts containing recurrent t vocabulary and structures with an appropriate level of comprehension
How is the course taught?
- A task-based approach is used
- Students engage in interactive editing and proof-reading activities, participating in group and pair work
- Regular feedback; students will also be offered guidance in self-study and set optional homework tasks
