This module will introduce participants to the range of current theories about childhood and to the practical issues of promoting children's rights. The module will explore the social construction of childhood and the implications this has for professional practice with children. This module will introduce participants to the range of current theories about childhood and to the practical issues of promoting children's rights. The module will explore the social construction of childhood and the implications this has for professional practice with children. Participants will develop an understanding of the sociological, socio-legal and political theories and concepts of childhood and children's rights, including the recognition of the varied childhood experiences in the Minority and Majority worlds. This will include a knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of people concerned with the care, education, health, welfare advocacy or control of children and young people. Participants will develop an awareness of the importance of listening to and including children's own views and interests when planning and providing for them.
