Masters Level Module

Starting with an exploration of new learning environments and trends, incl. the impact of technology on language (use) as well as communication and media practices, this module explores principles of and issues in the use of technology in language teaching and learning. It examines the affordances of digital technologies and explores their pedagogical implications and it discusses how the use of technological aids relates to theories of learning and research into second and foreign language teaching and learning. The emphasis is on new, digital technologies incl. digital video and audio, VLEs, CMC, social networking applications, (micro-)blogging, e-learning, IWBs, games and virtual environments and mobile devices (incl. tasks for their exploitation). Some consideration will also be given to more traditional Computer Assisted Language Learning software (in particular text manipulation, authoring software, speech technologies or concordancers). In this module, conceptual and theoretical issues are examined but there is also an emphasis on practical use and the development of participants' requisite pedagogical skills.

This module is also offered online in the Spring term.
