The TAM course runs from June of one year to August of the next and is designed to give teachers the skills and confidence to teach A level Mathematics effectively, focusing on mathematical knowledge and the principles behind A-level teaching. It is taught in collaboration with MEI (Mathematics in Education and Industry) who provide the associated on-line elements of curriculum-knowledge study using their existing web-based resources and virtual classroom.

This course is available only to teachers in state-funded schools and colleges in England and they must be teaching mathematics at a level beyond GCSE throughout the academic year. MEI collects course fees (£600 in 2012) but schools and colleges of participants receive a payment (£1200 in March 2013) in recognition of their support in enabling attendance.

Participants are required to take an active role in eight study days, spread across the year, that form the two compulsory modules A-level Mathematics Pedagogy and Understanding Learning and Thinking in A-level Mathematics. These days include sample lessons (covering the content of five A level modules), lesson analysis, presentations, readings and discussions on the pedagogic strategies and 'big ideas' of learning advanced mathematics. Participants are expected to develop their professional practice accordingly and they receive two school/college visits from the course tutors. Participants have access to the extensive MEI website of teaching and learning materials and this access continues for two years after course completion. Three optional follow-up days allow participants to extend their knowledge of applied mathematics modules, and complete a further 30-credit "Independent Study module".

During the course, teachers are asked to compile a portfolio of personal reflections on the course study days, teaching, relevant readings and learning -about-teaching. This port-folio forms part of the assessed work in each module. In addition:

  • For A-level Mathematics Pedagogy, participants write a 1000-word essay discussing ICT in A-level teach-ing, and a 3000-word essay based on a video analysis of their own questioning practices
  • For Understanding Learning and Thinking in A-level Mathematics, participants write a 4000-word essay: reviewing their own learning and learning-about-teaching for a chosen mathematical topic.
