MMAIAR_03: Inspection for Improvement
This distance-learning module aims to deepen participants' knowledge and understanding of the nature of inspection, regulation, audit and evaluation and its relation to institutional or organisational improvement drawing upon the most recent research and writing about inspection and its effect on development.
The module aims to:
- develop in participants an understanding of the key concepts and models in the academic and professional literature relevant to inspection, regulation, institutional improvement and its practice
- develop the capacity for critical reflection on participants' own professional practice, drawing on a range of theoretical and practice-based perspectives
- equip participants with a body of knowledge that will improve their understanding of the management and leadership of change, institutional effectiveness and improvement
- provide analytical frameworks and research insights to enable participants to reflect on concepts, theories and models of quality control, quality assurance, quality management, external and internal (self) evaluation and quality improvement
- provide analytical frameworks and research insights for participants to consider how they will contribute to improvement in their own role.
Session titles and indicative content are:
- Session 1 What is improvement, its links to quality and how it informs the role of inspection and regulation?
- Session 2 How do institutions and systems improve? School/college effectiveness, improvement and learning organizations
- Session 3 Leading change and improvement - 1
- Session 4 Leading change and improvement – 2
- Session 5 Does inspection lead to improvement? Key factors and processes
- Session 6 Inspection and evaluation: the debate (inspection as surveillance; the self-inspecting school, etc)
- Session 7 A self-improving system – from self-evaluation to school self- improvement
- Session 8 Concluding comments
The assessment of this module is in two parts:
Part One: 20% of the mark is derived from students' Journal reflections in response to the session activities.
Part Two: 80% of the mark is derived from a formal assignment of
4000 words. The assignment offers the opportunity to carry out a
case study of improvement and inspection.
