Masters Level Module

English for Academic Purposes is a key area in TESOL and applied linguistics with a substantial body of scholarly and practitioner literature. EAP examines language and literacy practices primarily in the tertiary sector, with the aim of developing insights into and critiquing language related policies and practices that college and university students commonly encounter during their academic studies. In this module, we will introduce major theories, key concepts and current issues in EAP and help students to develop a critical approach to EAP practice in tertiary institutions. As theorising practice is a key element of this module, students will be required to keep a learning journal either as an EAP practitioner in the workplace or as an EAP student on a course at the Academic Writing Centre (or equivalent). Drawing on their learning journals, students will design an EAP programme for a group of learners of their choice which will be assessed via an oral presentation and a written critical reflection.
