Field Internship

Typically, after completing the Certificate stage of the programme, you will spend up to two years in an internship, normally with SIL or one of its partner organisations, taking part in a language analysis or dictionary making project, or in some cases, language learning and data collection.

This internship is not formally part of the MA programme, but it permits students to put their initial training into practice immediately and begin a field assignment at an early stage. It also provides the exposure to language and literacy projects (including access to language data) that will normally be essential at the Diploma & Dissertation stages.

In exceptional circumstances, it may be appropriate for a student to proceed directly to the Diploma stage immediately after the Certificate stage and take an internship in a field assignment after that.

Postgraduate Diploma Stage

The Postgraduate Diploma stage, taken at ETP, also consists of two modules:
The Translation module which consists of three ETP courses:

  • Meaning and Communication
  • The Translation Course
  • Language Project Planning and Implementation

and the Discourse module which consists of two ETP courses:

  • Anthropology and Sociolinguistics Tutorials
  • Discourse for Translation

If you are successful at this stage, and you wish to exit the programme, you may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Field Linguistics from Middlesex Unversity.
