What do I need to get on this course?

To get on to the course you do not require any formal qualifications. You will, however, be required to sit an initial assessment test in English and Maths. This is to see whether your current English and Maths skills will allow you to cope with the requirements of the course. Completing the assessment does not mean that you will be automatically accepted on to the course. This will be followed by a one to one interview to see if you are a suitable candidate for the Access to Higher Education (Science) course.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification you will receive on completion of this Access course is the Access to Higher Education (Science) Diploma.

To attain this, you must have 60 credits of which 45 have to be from level 3 units and the remaining 15 from level 2 units. Each unit is worth 3 credits and has assessment criteria that have to be met through a variety of assessment methods, such as class work, group work, discussions, laboratory reports, experiment write ups, timed exams, presentations and essays.

Your progress is also assessed in terms of your attendance, punctuality and your ability to hand in your work on time. Your attendance and punctuality is continually monitored throughout the course. Feedback on this would be given to you by your course tutor.

Where does it lead?

You will be able to apply to do a degree programme at university in many different aspects of Science.
