Course Content

The HNC is awarded on successful completion of 8 units (120 credits) and the HND on the successful completion of 16 units (240 credits) Mandatory units include:

• Business Skills for e-Commerce: understand the structure and aims of business organisations, understand the impact of e-Commerce and be able to design e-Commerce solutions.
• Computer Systems: understand the function of computer systems, be able to design computer systems, be able to build and configure computer systems and be able to undertake routine maintenance on computer systems.
• Employability and Professional Development: be able to take responsibility for own personal and professional development, be able to demonstrate acquired interpersonal and transferable skills, understand the dynamics of working with others and be able to develop strategies for problem solving.
• Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation: be able to formulate a project, be able to implement the project within agreed procedures and to specification, be able to evaluate the project outcomes and be able to present the project outcomes.

• Networking: Networking Technologies, Routing Concepts, Design a Small or Home Office Network, Network Operating Systems
• Security: Network Security, IT Security Management, Digital Forensics
• Software Development: Computer Games Design and Development, Distributed Software Applications, Human Computer Interaction, Programming in .NET
• Web: Web Applications Development, Website Design, Website Management.

Assessment Method

This a mixture of written assignments, timed constrained assessment and a portfolio of practical work.

Progression

This course will prepare you for a career in business as computing and IT professionals and in public service in general. The Edexcel BTEC HND qualifications are nationally and internationally recognised by employers and professional bodies. The BTEC HND is well regarded in the computing and IT industry and therefore will offer the opportunity for gainful employment. Students can also progress direct to the third year of a full degree course at University.

Entry Requirements

A BTEC level 3 qualification in IT with a Merit profile or above. Mature students may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include work experience (paid or unpaid). Demonstrate a competence in Mathematics.
