The equestrian industry plays an increasingly important role in the UK economy. Public concern for animal welfare is being reflected in rapid changes in the sector, with the correct training and management of horses being recognised as essential.

The BSc (Hons) Equine Science and Welfare Management has been designed to reflect these advances, meeting the needs of the industry as identified by the sector skills council Lantra.

Course content

BSc (Hons) Equine Science and Welfare Management*

The course covers areas including equine ethology, neurophysiology, biomechanics and learning theory. This sound science base will inform practical work including work experience and optional horse riding.

Career opportunities

You will undertake a Practical Skills for Equestrian Science module in your first year. This, together with a work placement, will give you the practical skills for a career in the sector.

Employers offering placements in previous years have included mounted police units, local riding schools and livery yards and welfare organisations.

The course will prepare you for a variety of careers including horse welfare work, training horses, coaching riders or commercial equestrian yard management. You will also be prepared for employment in careers allied to the equine industry, for example research and consultancy work.
