BEng (Hons) Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering

These courses are focused on design. You can explore radical new aeronautical aerospace concepts and complement this with expertise in mechanical engineering to produce designs. Specialisms include aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, aircraft design, aircraft stability and control, manufacturing processes, business management and thermodynamics. These courses put high emphasis on learning transferable skills. The knowledge and skills you will gain are also applicable in many other industries such as renewable energy, nuclear power and car industries.

• State-of-the-art Merlin Flight Simulator. Design and test your own aircraft using engineering theory and see how alterations to aircraft affect the flying experience

• You will also have access to flight simulation packages such as FLITE, RANT navaids trainer and Boeing 747

• Access to cutting edge design, analysis and simulation softwares - Fluent for computational fluid dynamics, Abaqus for finite element analysis, MATLAB and Simulink for dynamics system modelling/analysis/simulation, Pro Engineer and Edge-Cam

• Access to the university's internationally-recognised research centres, including the Advanced Composite Training and Development Centre at Airbus.

• Excellent links with industry. Vocational training opportunities at companies such as Airbus UK, Light Aero, Garmin, MyTravel and Hawker Beechcraft (FdEng courses)

• Subsonic and supersonic wind tunnel facilities and a fully operational gas turbine test cell on our Wrexham campus

• Work on jet and piston engine aircraft in our aircraft hangar

• Apply for member status with the IMechE when you graduate, and after a period of appropriate work experience (honours degree graduates only). You will be eligible to
  be considered for membership of RAeS (BEng (Hons) graduates only)

• Join the Institution of Engineering and Technology at Engineering Technician level (HND/HNC students). You will be invited to interview and membership will be at a level in line with your grade and responsibilities (fee payable)

• Rapid Prototyping Facility (fused deposition method) and specialist manufacturing systems simulation software

If you choose to study the three-year BEng route you will have the opportunity to transfer to the MEng route on successful completion of your second year of study.

Career opportunities

The current UK shortage of qualified engineering graduates means you will have plenty of career options when you graduate. You can find employment in the fields of aeronautical, mechanical and manufacturing engineering consultancy, research and development or in the armed forces.

Previous graduates have gone on to work for organisations such as Airbus UK, Rolls Royce Engineers, the National Air Traffic Control Service and British Airways, amongst others.

Entry requirements and applying

BEng

The academic requirement for this honours degree is 240 UCAS tariff points at GCE A Level or Equivalent. (To include A level in mathematics or a relevant science subject or equivalent). Appropriate AS-Level and Level 3 Key Skills qualifications will also be taken into account.
