Sport & Public Service - Level 1

Prepare yourself for an active career in a range of sectors including sport leadership, armed forces, police, fire service, fitness or as a paramedic by enrolling yourself onto the Level 1 Sport and Public Service course. Get ready to get physical. This course will put your fitness levels to the test, and at the same time you’ll learn all about physical fitness, adventurous outdoor activities, safety factors relating to exercise, map reading and navigation, training programmes, and teamwork. This is a great introductory course that will give you plenty of options and allow you to pursue your dream career. As part of your studies, you’ll get the chance to improve on your functional skills. Functional skills are a range of skills that help you succeed in education, employment, lifelong learning and personal development. Functional skills qualifications are in English, Maths and IT and are an integral part of your learning experience. It will help you to develop skills in problem solving, teamwork, and delivery of presentations.

When you are required to undertake sporting activities, you’ll need to wear the correct sports and footwear. During the year, the tutors will organise trips and activities that are relevant to your course. There is a charge for these trips and activities and you will be expected to pay when you enrol for the course. Full details can be given by the tutor.

You should already have at least two GCSEs at grades A* - D (including English). All prospective students will be interviewed and expected to be enthusiastic about the course and the careers it can lead to.

The Sports and Public Services - Level 1 course will help you develop skills that can be used in the workplace. This means that you could pursue a job in the Public services or sports industry. If this course has given you a taste to learn more, you can choose to enrol onto a level 2 course in a related subject. Or, you can take your skills into general employment.

Kevin Pottinger Group Commander Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service Kevin is an Operational Commander for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service which provides 24/7 emergency response for the county. Kevin also manages the Training and Development team and also the Risk Team, a team which ensures that the county risks such as historical buildings, industrial sites and the wider risks to the community are known to the staff as it is important that they all have information about the properties and incidents they could potentially attend. Kevin says: There are a number of ways that students can prepare themselves for a career in the Fire Service. They need to have a wide range of experiences and skills to support their role. Experience in other fields is also useful; in particular community work as understanding the community you support is very important.
