Additional Notes

Nail technician equipment to support learning to be purchased at start of course - this is an extensive array of specialist tools and products, information will be provided. Kits are supplied by mail order. All practical skills are performed on each other and on practice hand models as part of the learning process and students must be prepared to receive all treatments on a regular basis until competency is reached to work on the paying clientele. Every student must actively generate his or her own clients for adequate amount of practice and assessment. * Kit - nail care, extensions, gels, wraps, foils, polishes, special fx, tools etc * Uniform - tunic and trousers * Shoes * Books * Examination and material costs includes salon fee to cover products, consumables and equipment used in training INDUSTRY INFORMATION Hours Your working hours would typically be 9am to 5pm, including Saturdays. Some salons offer evening appointments. You could work in a high street salon or beauty clinic, health spa, hotel, or on a cruise ship. You could also be self-employed, either working from home or visiting clients in their own homes. Skills and knowledge To become a Nail Technician you would need: a friendly and welcoming manner the ability to make clients feel relaxed tact, diplomacy and the ability to listen and communicate well the ability to explain procedures clearly to clients business awareness and the ability to sell products and earn commission a high standard of personal hygiene and care for your appearance the ability to be on your feet for most of the day some knowledge of chemistry, anatomy and human biology a talent for applying nail art and make-up. Key facts: There are 51,500 people working in the health and fitness industry. There are over 3,100 private fitness facilities within the UK with 4,397,200 members. There are just under 2,600 public health and fitness facilities, which have over 2,758,400 members. 38% of the workforce is employed full-time, 42% part-time and 20% self-employed. Around 29% of the health and fitness workforce is aged 16-24 years (compared with 14% across all industries in the UK) South West - There are 53,700 people employed in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector, of which 4,100 are employed in the health and fitness industry. The region offers a range of opportunities for surfing, sailing, surf lifesaving, Tarka Trail, Camel Trail and coastal paths. Industry skills gaps in the region include: sport specific technical skills; communication; management; team-working; planning and preparing work; initiative; project management; and problem solving.

Entry Criteria

GCSE grade A-C in English Language * A level 2 vocational qualification e.g. beauty therapy - direct entry is considered for exceptional applicants. * An excellent school/college/work record/reference * Successful interview as well as successful completion of an assessment at interview * Candidates will be screened at interview for literacy and numeracy skills * Caring nature, mature attitude, committed, self-motivated, impeccable appearance and sound educational background * All learners must be prepared to receive all treatments as part of the learning process * Normal Gloucestershire College application and interview procedures apply

STAFF INDUSTRY EXPERT Jo Wheeler-Smith - Lecturer Jo studied at GC, and then learnt to do aromatherapy, which led to management and later on working on a cruise ship offering beauty treatment. This job enabled her to travel the world, including the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Australia on a cruise ship, which she did for 3 years.
