About This Course

THIS COURSE IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS AGED 16-19. There are hundreds of different jobs available in the construction industry. The maintenance operations pre-apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to experience a range of trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, painting and decorating As a maintenance operative, you may work in one or more of the following areas: · Measuring the work area and setting out · Shaping and trimming bricks using hammers · Checking that courses are straight using water or laser spirit levels · dry lining - fixing internal plasterboard or wallboard partitions by fastening them together on a timber or metal frame ready for decorating. · filling holes and cracks and making sure surfaces are level · preparing surfaces with primer and undercoat · mixing paint to the right shade, either by hand or using computerised colour-matching equipment · applying layers of paint and hanging wallpaper To become a maintenance operative, you will need to have: · good practical skills · the ability to work quickly and accurately · maths skills for calculating surface areas and volumes of materials · a reasonable level of fitness · the ability to work as part of a team · an awareness of health and safety issues. Salary range: £8,000 - £24,000+ Average hours per week: 40 For the first six weeks you will be given the opportunity to study at least three of the trades listed above and at the end of that period you will be able to make an informed choice on the trade that you would like to pursue. Students based at Gloucester or RFD will study brickwork, carpentry and plastering and those based at Cheltenham or Launchpad will study brickwork, carpentry and painting and decorating. Successful completion of this NOCN Award will enable you to move on to the C Skills Level 1 Diploma in your chosen trade for the rest of the academic year. You will study the following units in each of the trades: LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN TROWEL OCCUPATIONS Site safety Material storage and material quantities Building technology Basic bricklaying skills Basic block laying skills Basic cavity walling LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN CARPENTRY AND JOINERY Site safety Material storage and material quantities Building technology Safe use of hand tools Safe use of power tools LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN PLASTERING Site safety Material storage and material quantities Prepare surfaces for plaster Apply plaster to various surfaces Produce components from moulds LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN PAINTING AND DECORATING Site safety Matreial storage and material quanties Prepare surfaces for decoration Access platforms ( tower scasffolds) Apply paint to a variety of surfaces Produce decorative surfaces

Additional Notes

Steel toe capped shoes/boots and sturdy clothing to protect your body will be required.

Entry Criteria

There are no mandatory academic requirements to start a career as a maintenance operative. Initially you will need to demonstrate a positive outlook and a dedication to working in the construction industry and this will be checked during interview.

Progression Details

Upon successfully completing your Level 1 qualification you will be able to gain further skills by completing a level 2 qualification in your chosen trade. You may seek an apprenticeship with an employer and then choose to continue on to a higher level qualification.
