An apprenticeship in hairdressing is a great way of learning for people who want paid work while they study. All you need to do is ask your employer to support your application. If you're accepted onto the course, a lecturer from Gloucestershire College will visit you in your workplace to assess the salon and the commitment of you and your employer. It's a two year course in which you'll learn to cut hair, advise and consult with clients, style and finish hair, and set and dress hair too. As part of the course, you'll get the chance to show off your skills and maximise your creativity by taking part in the College shows and photoshoots. You may even have the chance to represent your salon and the college at national industry shows. The amazing salons situated in the College are all up to industry standard and not only will it be your place of learning, it will also be your place of work for one day of the week. The remainder of the week you will be working in your salon and assessments will take place both in College and your place of work. Assessors will come to discuss your progress at your salon with you and your manager on a regular basis so that both the salon can work jointly to support your progression. Additional NotesYou’ll need to buy a full hairdressing kit, a black tunic to wear and a variety of stationery. A full list will be given to you at the beginning of the course. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Hours You would usually work up to 40 hours a week, between 9am and 6pm. This would usually include Saturdays with a day off in the week. Some salons open late on one or two evenings during the week. Part-time work is often available. You could also work freelance, either renting space within a salon or visiting customers in their own homes. Income Pay for trainee hairdressers is likely to be based around the National Minimum Wage. This will vary depending on age. Visit the GOV.UK website for details of the National Minimum Wage. Fully-trained hairdressers can earn between £14,000 and £20,000 a year. Top professional hairdressers can earn £30,000 a year or more, depending on who they work for and the salon location. Entry CriteriaIf you've decided that a career in hairdressing is what you want and you have drive and commitment then the apprenticeship could be for you. As well as enthusiasm, you must have a grade A to D in English, Maths and Science and complete a successful interview with the course leader.
Progression DetailsTo complete the full apprenticeship you will need to complete the NVQ level 2 in hairdressing along with key skills in communication, application of number and IT at level 1. Once you've completed the Apprenticeship Level 2, it's advisable to progress onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship course.
