Holistic therapy is a generic term for any treatment /therapy session that is intended to treat the individual as a whole on all levels - mind, body and spirit. Most complementary or alternative therapies could be regarded as holistic. Dependent on your individual needs you are likley to see improvements in your posture, co-ordination, balance, mobility, strengthening of muscles and improved flexibility. This class will use the Hatha method of yoga; it will be a slow-paced stretching class with some simple breathing exercises and perhaps seated meditation. This is a good place to learn basic poses, relaxation techniques, and become comfortable with yoga. The course will follow a set programme of vocational based activities to encourage, promote and develop the learner’s personal skills and confidence, to encourage change in lifestyle, ambitions and aspirations. Your tutor will regularly review your activities and offer you support and guidance. You will be encouraged to identify small, realistic and achievable goals to work towards throughout the course and will keep a learning log to monitor your progress and achievement within the group. Learners are expected to attend regularly ie at least 80% of the duration of the course.
Additional NotesLearners will be advised to wear loose clothing with layers so you can add adjust during the cool down period. Some learners like to bring their own hand towel (makes a useful pillow). If you have your own yoga mat please bring it to the session, otherwise they will be provided.
Entry CriteriaThis course is for adults (age 19 or over as at 31st August 2012) with mild physical or learning disabilities. Care support is not available through the college but learners may be supported by their own carers who will expected to participate in the activities.
Progression DetailsYour tutor will be able to advise of any follow on or suitable alternatively funded courses. Learners will be encouraged to discuss options with the college information, advice and guidance teams.
