This Overseas Nurses Programme is a full-time professional course which is designed for overseas nurses to learn and adapt their existing skills and knowledge, allowing them to practice in the UK.

Nurses registered with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council must re-register each year and pay the required fee.

Entry and admission criteria

You must first apply for a notification letter from the NMC in order to assess whether you are able to register with the NMC. For information about the entry requirements set by the NMC please visit www.nmc-uk.org|.

  • A first level nursing registration from a country outside the EU (evidenced by original certificate).
  • An NMC Assessment letter outlining the requirements for you to join the NMC register
  • A tier 2 work sponsored visa, or indefinite leave to remain in the UK

You must also send certified copies (signed by solicitor) of the documents the NMC requests with your application form to us. A full list of what is required is present on the application form. We will ask you to present the original copies of these documents to our International Admissions Office once we have confirmed your place on the course.

If you are undertaking a period of supervised practise then you must also complete an occupational health check, declaration form, enhanced CRB disclosure application form and a criminal record certificate from your home country before starting the course, which needs to be cleared in accordance with DMU's admissions policy. Teaching and assessment

Typical contact time is 100 hours in total, with 24 hours dedicated to independent study. This includes tutorial support for assessments and placement visits.

A diverse range of teaching styles are used, including lectures, seminars, workshops, e-learning, guided reading, problem solving and support from expert practitioners.

Many of our academic staff have expertise in specialist areas of teaching such as cultural communication and working with overseas nurses from EU, Africa and South East Asia.

The teaching for this programme includes an in depth exploration of the UK Health Service and the way that healthcare is delivered. A number of service delivery models are explored along with their impact in providing a high quality of care.

Students explore the concepts of clinical governance and the quality assurance systems that underpin the NHS.

The role of the nurse is also explored, giving students an in depth understanding of the values, philosophies and standards that nurses are expected to achieve.

We help students develop their own learning styles and provide access to all student support services within DMU.

Industry links and professional accreditation

The continuing relationship with the NHS means that you will spend your practice placements in an environment that is aware and capable of delivering the required knowledge and skills that you need to successfully complete the module.

Work experience and placements

The period of supervised practice will be delivered in accordance to the NMC registrar's letter. The specified time is usually three–six months; based on your training and experience. You will have to organise your own placement which are available within the local NHS hospitals and community.

These give you the opportunity to observe the work of various nurse and medical specialists, which could open up new career options for the future. Your placement will need to be relevant to your practice area e.g. adult, mental health, learning disabilities as stated on the registrar’s letter.

Graduate careers

Completing this course allows you to expand your potential, boosting your career prospects as a registered nurse on Band 5 able to work within the National Health Service or private health sector. After a period of consolidation in employment you may have the opportunity to access healthcare degrees or modules at DMU.
