About This Course:The course covers how buildings are planned, designed, constructed and maintained. You’ll also learn about how these buildings exist within their environment. A common first year provides a general grounding before you specialise in the second year. This leads to a named HND in Building Surveying. Students may confirm or change their specialism (subject to places) prior to commencement of second year studies.
What You Need:- Two Higher Grade passes, preferably including Mathematics or a Science, OR
- A National Certificate in Built Environment or equivalent qualification at SCQF level 6, OR
- Relevant personal/work experience.

What You Study:The subjects you’ll study will follow a common first year programme with other built environment courses and include Drawing & Design, Building Science, Construction Technology, Building Services, Construction Site Surveying, Mathematics, CAD and Quantitative Building Studies.
Your second year subjects will reflect your chosen specialism and focus on the core Building Surveying skills including contractual and commercial knowledge and further develop your knowledge of building maintenance and repair and refurbishment or redevelopment.
After The Course:Career
Higher building surveying technician and junior management employment with major companies in the construction and property sectors, by private consultant practices and by local authorities, health trusts and other government organisations.
Continuing study
Apply for BSc (Hons) courses in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying or Building Control at Glasgow Caledonian, Heriot-Watt or Napier universities.
How Long:Two years, starting in August.
You can also leave after one year with a Higher National Certificate in Construction.
