About This Course:The course trains you for a career in the communication industries. You’ll develop an understanding of the nature and function of advertising and public relations, within a wider marketing and marketing communications framework.

About This Course:The course trains you for a career in the communication industries. You’ll develop an understanding of the nature and function of advertising and public relations, within a wider marketing and marketing communications framework.
You’ll also learn how to communicate effectively in this environment. You’ll make presentations and pitches to industry professionals, prepare project work and carry out assignments. You’ll meet a number of industry guest speakers and contacts and in second year, there is a course educational study visit to New York. There is a large social media component to the course, reflecting industry practice – you will study units in this area, and be then expected to use appropriate social media throughout the course.
What You Need:HNC
- Higher Grade English at Grade C or above, and two other passes at Standard Grade or equivalent at band 3 or above, OR:
- A relevant National Qualification (NQ) including Core Skills Higher Communication (or equivalent) and appropriate subject modules
HND
- Two Higher Grade passes at Grade C or above, including English, OR:
- A relevant NC or NQ including Core Skills Higher Communication or equivalent, and appropriate subject modules
- Before we offer you a place, we’ll invite you to an interview where you’ll need to show a genuine interest in advertising and public relations. Adult learners with some relevant experience in, or who hope to move into Advertising and PR may be accepted subject to interview
- All entry subject to outcome of discussion at interview

What You Study:Some of the core units you’ll study include:
Year 1
Advertising Industry, PR, Digital and Social Media, Corporate Identity, Consumer Behaviour, Media Law.
Year 2
Advertising Campaign, PR 2, Media Analysis, Marketing, Digital Imaging Project. You’ll also be able to choose optional units.
After The Course:Career
Work in advertising agencies, public relations consultancies, social/digital media companies and promotion consultancies or in the advertising departments of industrial, commercial or media-based companies. There are a number of work experience and placement opportunities throughout the course.
Continuing study
HNC
Apply for second year of the HND Advertising and Public Relations.
HND
Apply for second or third year of Degree courses such as BA (Hons) Media & Communication or BA (Hons) Marketing at Glasgow Caledonian University or BA (Hons) Public Relations & Marketing; BA (Hons) Public Relations & Media & BA (Hons) Communications, Advertising & Marketing at Queen Margaret University; BA (Hons) International Marketing at University of the West of Scotland.
How Long:HNC - One year, starting in August.
HND - Two years, starting in August.
