Summary:
BTEC Diplomas are an ideal choice if you are keen to combine academic studies with developing your sport performance and prefer a vocational alternative to A Levels. They can satisfy university entry requirements if completed to a minimum of Merit level but will also prepare you for a choice of interesting and worthwhile careers in the sport and fitness industry.
This course provides a breadth of sports related modules, preparing for a varaiety of progression options.
The course also enables potential progression on to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences (one extra year that must be applied for upon completion of the Level 3 Diploma).

Course Code: A0097 Minimum Age: 16 Course Length: One year Course Schedule: 3/4 days a week which vary due to timetabling Entry Requirements:Essential:
Six GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths, English and Science; or GNVQ Intermediate in a related subject; or BTEC First Diploma in a related subject at Merit level.
Desirable:
Sport at representative level and/or recommendation of coach.
Coaching or officiating qualifications.
Core Skills:Students will complete a total of 12 units worth 120credits (5 units are mandatory units, topped up by another 7 units). This is equivalent to 2 full A Levels.

- Anatomy for Sport and Exercise
- Sport and Exercise Physiology
- Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences
- Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences
Additional units may include the following:
- Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
- Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
- Analysis of Sports Performance
- Sports Nutrition
- Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
- Sports Injuries
- Practical Team Sports
Additional study is required to complete the course which includes approximately 8-10 hours per week of home-based study.
Assessment:Modules will draw on different assessment strategies which will include written assignments (primarily), practical assessment activities/observations, presentations (individual/group), end of module tests, peer group assessments.
All units are internally assessed and students can achieve either a pass, merit or distinction grade for each individual unit. To achieve a 'pass', students must have satisfied all 'pass' assessment criteria, to achieve a 'merit' a student must have additional satisfied all the 'merit' criteria. For the highest unit grade of 'distinction', all pass, merit and disction assessment criteria must be achieved.
All assessments are given a deadline and must be submitted on time to allow the student to stay on track. Staff will attempt to mark submitted work within 2 weeks and it will be returned identifying what has been successfully achieved and with development feedback on how to go about achieving higher grades. Staff will always encourage students to work towards achieving 'merit' grades to help with their progression.
Academic Progression:After successful completion of this course you could progress onto the Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science (if successfully achieving the progression conditions, listed below). This is an additional one year course that offers more specialist modules and additional vocational qualifications. Progression conditions include:
- achieving a minimum of a merit grade profile on the Diploma, and
- having a minimum of at least 85% attendance, and
- having a clear disciplinary record
Other progression options include:
- VCTC Level 3 Diploma in the Prevention and Management of Sports Injuries (one year qualification).
- Foundation Degree in Sport, Health and Exercise (with opportunity to top-up to a full BSc (Hons) in Applied Sport, Health and Exercise).

worthwhile careers in the sport and fitness industry. Potential
careers could include:- Teaching
- Sports Science
- Coaching
- Personal Training/Gym Instruction
