Full TimeThe AS (Advanced Subsidiary)can be taken as a discrete one year
qualification or as the first half a full two year A Level. The
courses are challenging, rewarding and enjoyable and offer a
valuable experience for learners with a keen interest and aptitude
in this subject area.
The course enables you to develop skills through a variety of activities assessed through Course work (Exploring Film Form) 40% and Examination (British and American Film) 60%. You will study how film makes meaning using mise en scene and cinematography in contemporary film within a chosen genre. This work is assessed through an essay of 1500 words. The course enables you to develop skills through a variety of
activities assessed through Course work (Exploring Film Form) 40%
and Examination (British and American Film) 60%. You will study how
film makes meaning using mise en scene and cinematography in
contemporary film within a chosen genre. This work is assessed
through an essay of 1500 words. In addition to the essay there is
also a creative project based on a creative film sequence in the
form of a storyboard which further explores and develops the ideas
and conventions of genre discovered through the study of
contemporary film making in the earlier part of the course.
The A2 builds on the work undertaken in Yr 1 and includes a personal research study 40% and Examination, Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates 60%
How you will gain the qualification
You will gain this qualification through coursework and an externally set assignment at both AS & A2. Final grades are determined by marks awarded to your coursework and the externally set assignments.
What qualifications you need
A minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C including English Language. Entry to A2 is conditional on achieving A*-E at AS level.
Where to next
Film Studies provides excellent preparation for degree level study of film and media as well as any humanities based degree or HND course. It also provides a good background for management careers in: film exhibition distribution marketing, events management, publicity and promotion and, of course, journalism.
