PHYSICS
The AS/A Level Physics follows the AQA specification A and
builds upon topics covered at GCSE. The areas of study include
particle and quantum physics, electricity, mechanics and waves.
These topics are delivered through two theory modules in each year
of the programme.
The AS modules are: PHYA1 – Mechanics, Materials and Waves;
PHYA2 –Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Waves.
The A2 modules are PHYA4 – Fields and Further Mechanics and PHA5
which covers options topics in Physics.
In both years the third unit covered is “Practical and
Investigative Physics”, PHA3(AS), PHA6 (A2).

How you will gain the qualification
AS Level: PHYA1and PHYA2 are both assessed through a 1.25 hour
written structured answer paper and are each worth 40% of the AS
qualification; PHA3 is worth 20%.
A2 Level: PHA4 and PHA5 are both assessed through a 1.75 hour written paper and are each worth 40% of the A2 qualification; PHA6 is worth 20%.
What qualifications you need
Students wishing to study AS/ A Levels at Coleg Cambria require
a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C or better including GCSE English
or, English Language.
Students wishing to join AS Level Physics also need grades BB in
GCSE Science and Additional Science or grade B in GCSE Physics. A
grade B in GCSE Maths is also required.(all Science and Maths
qualifications must be gained on Higher Tier papers).
It is strongly recommended that AS Level Physics is studied
alongside AS Level Maths (Mechanics, if available). Students who do
not study AS Level Maths with Physics will need a grade A in GCSE
Maths as an entry requirement.
Applicants with grade C in Science qualifications should discuss
alternative Level 3 Science provision.
For progression from AS to A2 a minimum grade E is required overall in the AS qualification, with a grade E attained on each theory paper.
Where to next
A Level Physics is accepted as a recognized academic qualification for entrance to all Higher Education institutions and underpins theoretical aspects of Engineering, Technology and Electronics. Employers value candidates with Physics qualifications highly owing to the versatile range of skills they bring.
