LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN APPLIED SCIENCE
The full programme consists of a range of units in Biology,
Chemistry, Physics and application of Maths in Science each worth
10 credits. The majority of units taught have a Biology and
Chemistry focus.
In the first year of study Mandatory units worth 60 credits are
taught including Scientific Pracitical Techniques, Scientific
Investigations and Perceptions of Science to establish good
practice in technique and enquiry at Level 3 in a vocational
context. These are taught alongside three more specialist Optional
Units, worth 30 credits, to claim the 90 credit Diploma at the end
of Year 1.

In Year 2, nine Optional units are taught which build on the
concepts, skills and techniques covered in Year 1. Titles for
Optional units include Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Biomedical
Science Techniques, Physiology of Human Body Systems, Physiological
Investigations, Practical Chemical Analysis.
There are regular guest speakers to enhance the vocational
relevance of this programme and opportunities for external visits
to support the curriculum. The course includes opportunities to
achieve the Essential Skills in Application of Number,
Communication and IT as well as wider Key Skills, all of which are
recognised by Universities and Employers.
The course is demanding and requires good practical, theoretical and organisational skills.
How you will gain the qualification
Assessment is continual throughout the course and features a range of assignment projects, practical tasks and research activities, using classroom lessons and self-directed study. All work is internally assessed and graded on a Pass/Merit/Distinction scale. They all contribute to the overall grade for the qualification over 1 or 2 years. There are no set examinations.
What qualifications you need
5 GCSEs at Grade C or above GCSE including Maths and GCSE English Language plus one of the following Science options:
Science (Higher tier) GCSEs or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied
Science at Merit grade. L2 Certificates or Extended Certificates at
Merit level will be considered, depending on the overall grade
profile.
Mature students will be considered on an individual
basis.
For progression to Year 2 students must have attained the 90 credit Diploma at the end of Year 1.
Where to next
The natural progression from this course is either a full time degree courses or directly into a job. The BTEC Extended Diploma can provide access to work in hospital, education, quality control, testing and environmental science laboratories. Suitable degree routes would be Environemnt or Forensic Science, Biochemistry, Physiotherapy or Nursing as well as many other options.
