The AS/A2 Level Sociology follows the AQA specification and it is assumed that students will follow a two year programmer.

SCLY1: CULTURE AND IDENTITY




What does it mean to be British, White or Male in today’s society? Is class still a key factor in Identity? Are we now experiencing Hybrid Identities in Modern Britain ?




SCLY2: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH METHODS




What is Education for? Why are girls grades improving compared to boys? What role do Teaches and peers play in achievement?

Who owns and controls the Media? How powerful is the Media in creating violence? Is New Media enhancing Democracy?




SCLY4: CRIME AND DEVIANCE THEORY AND METHODS.


Who makes and breaks the Law? How is social control enforced in our society? What are the causes of crime?




The course is demanding, requiring literacy skills for essay work, and analytical and evaluative skills for researching methodological studies and texts.




To aid students’ achievement and progression Coleg Cambria is committed to providing opportunities to develop and accredit the Key Skills. The following Key Skills are delivered as part of this A level course: AS IOLP level 3. A2: Communication level 3.



How you will gain the qualification

Internal assessments will use a variety of formats to enable students to gain a clear picture of their progress and take action for improvement. Internal Mock examinations will be held in January\February. External examinations are held in May (for AS) and June (for A2).




Weighting of each module within the qualification:




AS modules:


SCLY1 60 minute written examination: MAXIMUM UMS 80


SCLY2 120 minute written examination: MAXIMUM UMS 120




A2 modules:


SCLY 3 90 minute written examination: MAXIMUM UMS 80


SCLY4 120 minute written examination: MAXIMUM UMS 120


What qualifications you need

College entry requirements:


Students wishing to study AS/A level at Coleg Cambria require a minimum of 6 GCSEs including English Language at grade C or above




Subject Entry Requirements:


Students wishing to join AS Level Sociology require either English Language Grade B or a B grade in a similar literacy based subject (e.g. History, English Literature, RE)




It is expected that students start the course with the intention of carrying on into A2.


Where to next

A Level Sociology is accepted as a recognized academic qualification for entrance to all Higher Education institutions and employers in all professions highly value candidates with Sociology qualifications, owing to the versatile range of skills they bring.
