Full Time

The Department follows the WJEC modular specification, where each of the Mathematics units have equal weightings. There are thirteen units available to choose from; C1, C2, C3, C4, FP1, FP2, FP3, M1, M2, M3, S1, S2, S3, for the areas of Core Maths, Further Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics respectively. Studying C1, C2 and either M1 or S1 leads to the qualification of AS Maths.


The Double Maths candidates will achieve AS Pure Maths in their first year of study comprising of C1, C2 and C3. The Double Maths candidates will achieve AS Pure Maths in their first year of study comprising of C1, C2 and C3. Study of 12 of the units leads to the two A Level qualifications of Mathematics and Further Mathematics, but Further Mathematics can only be achieved as part of a 12 unit programme of study, and candidates choosing this option must enrol for both the Maths for Double Maths AND Further Maths for Double Maths courses.


Students taking Physics are strongly recommended to study either the Mechanics option or the Double Maths option. Double Maths is recommended for able Mathematicians and is increasingly a preferred option at many universities for those intending to study subjects such as Physics, Engineering or Chemistry.



How you will gain the qualification

At both AS and A2 levels written papers are sat for each unit of the qualification. Each paper is 1.5 hours in length and has equal weighting within the qualification.




There will be internal mock examinations on published dates to provide realistic examination experience.


What qualifications you need

Students wishing to study AS/A Levels at Coleg Cambria require a minimum of six full GCSEs grade C or better in appropriate subjects including GCSE English or English Language. GCSE English Literature is NOT a substitute.


In order to Study AS Level Mathematics, candidates must have achieved a grade B in the Higher Tier paper in GCSE Mathematics and prove to be suitable to study Maths.


If a candidate wishes to choose the courses Maths for Double Maths and Further Maths for Double Maths, a grade A or A* in GCSE Mathematics is required.




For progression to A2 Mathematics, a minimum of a grade E at AS is required, and it is preferred that at least 40 UMS marks (equivalent to a grade E) is achieved in each of the 3 AS units.


Where to next

AS Mathematics is relevant to a wide range of Higher Education courses. In addition AS Mathematics would be a desirable qualification in many occupations; The Civil Service, finance, banking, in technical, computing, scientific and engineering work, and in governmental and developmental institutions.
