An A level in Mathematics can lead to further study at university or can enhance employment prospects as A level Mathematics is valued highly by employers What will I be doing on the course? For both AS and A2, students study two compulsory modules plus one applied module from Statistics 1, Mechanics 1, Decision Maths 1 for AS and Statistics 1, Mechanics 1, Decision 1, Mechanics 2, Decision 2 for A2. Bridging Maths: This is a free standing maths qualification taken in the first year of study, which gains UCAS points. As well as obtaining an additional nationally recognised qualification, students will gain support in all underlying mathematical concepts required for success in AS Maths. This course is compulsory for all AS Maths students. This is not for general enrolment. FURTHER MATHS: Cheltenham only In recent years Further Maths has become more highly regarded as a differentiator for university applications. Those with exceptional ability in maths and problem solving may wish to consider Further Maths. Students study AS and A2 maths (6 modules in total) in the first year. The 6 modules of Further Maths would be studied in the second year, thus gaining two full A Levels over two years. Note: with the application modules (Decision Maths 1, Decision Maths 2, Mechanics 1, Mechanics 2, Mechanics 3) the lower numbered module must be taken before progressing.
Additional NotesFor full time students the course will form part of a larger programme of study which consists of timetabled sessions, enrichment activities, work experience and private study time. To achieve this a student will normally be asked to select from columns of the 6th Form matrix in each year of study. If a student falls below this programme requirement they may be classed as part time by some external agencies and may be required to pay fees for their tuition and/or exams. Please check with the tutor at interview that the subjects you have selected form a full-time programme. Every full time 6th Form student will have a personal tutor and will study a tutorial programme. The tutor will be responsible for the pastoral care of the student and for the tracking and monitoring of their progress on the course. This subject can be selected on its own for part time study for which tuition fees may be payable (please consult Student Services for fee concessions). Part time students may also be required to pay exam fees. You may have the opportunity to go on trips during the year. A small charge will be payable for these visits.
