The syllabus is divided into the following format:- Year 1 (AS Level) Unit G451 An introduction to Physical Education This unit focuses on the impact of physical activity on the systems of the body and on young peoples participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. This unit comprises 3 areas of study:Anatomy and Physiology Acquiring movement skills and Socio-cultural studies Unit G452 Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education Students are required to study 2 practical activities from the available choices. There may be an opportunity to include leadership, coaching and officiating as part of assessment in individual cases. Practical activities can be selected from the categories: Athletic activities, Combat activities, Dance activities, Invasion games, Net/Wall games, Striking/Fielding games, Target games, Gymnastic activities, Outdoor and Adventurous activities, Swimming activities and Safe and effective exercise activitites. Students will also be required to carry out a critical evaluation of a live performance in their chosen activity.




Year 2 (A Level) Unit G453 - Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education This unit has two sections: Socio-cultural options which includes Historical studies and Comparative studies Scientific Options which includes Sports Psychology and Exercise and Sport Physiology Unit G454 - The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activitites in Physical Education Students will expand on their AS practical work in ONE of their chosen activities. In addition, all students will verbally analyse a performance and recommend strategies for improvement.



How you will gain the qualification

The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) forms 50% of the assessment weighting of the full A Level. AS can be taken as a stand-alone specification or as the first part of the full A Level course. AS candidates take Units G451 and G452 A2 candidates take G451, G452, G453 and G454.


What qualifications you need

The full course will be open to both male and female students who have the required academic qualifications: 6 GCSEs at Grade C or above, to include a grade C in Science (Higher Tier) and grade C in English Language.



A BTEC Level 2 Diploma in a related subject at Merit level (inclusive of at least one GCSE in Science, English Language or Maths).



An essential requirement is an enthusiastic and committed approach to the study of both the theoretical and practical components of Physical Education. In order to progress on to A2 PE, students must attain at least grade E in both elements of the AS.


Where to next

Successful students will find the qualifications useful if they intend to: (i) follow further courses within the Higher Education sector particularly in Physical Education or related subjects ie Sports Science, Human Movement, Recreational Management. (ii) pursue careers in areas such as: Sports Administration, Leisure and Recreation Management, Police and Armed Forces, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Remedial Gymnastics, Sports Journalism, Teaching.
