This Physics specification provides a smooth transition to A Level from previous studies and is designed to develop students’ interest and enthusiasm for physics.

This Physics specification provides a smooth transition to A Level from previous studies and is designed to develop students’ interest and enthusiasm for physics.

Course content

Units one to three are followed in the first year and units four to six in the second year.

  • Unit 1 - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity. This unit covers the foundations of atomic and nuclear physics, quantum phenomena and electricity.
  • Unit 2 - Mechanics, Materials and Waves. This unit covers the principles and applications of mechanics, materials and waves.
  • Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills. This unit covers the various skills and techniques involved in practical work.
  • Unit 4 - Fields and Further Mechanics. This unit covers various aspects of motion and vibration as well as the study of electric, magnetic and gravitational fields.
  • Unit 5 - Nuclear and Thermal Physics. This unit covers the properties of the nucleus as well as the thermal properties of materials. In addition we will study an option based on in depth study of some key developments in physics.
  • Unit 6 - Investigative and Practical Skills. This continues and develops the experimental techniques introduced in Unit 3.

Entry requirements

AS Physics students should also be studying AS Maths. Occasionally there may be exceptions to this requirement, so please contact the advice and admissions team at the College. They will direct your enquiry to the subject team.

In addition, students will need to have:

  • 7 GCSEs grade A-C including English Language
  • BB in 2 GCSE science subjects i.e. from Core, Additional Science or separate GCSE sciences
  • B grade GCSE Maths

Students with vocational qualifications at level 2 or other non-standard entry qualifications should contact the guidance team at the college for advice.

Progression

A level Physics enables students to develop a wide range of intellectual, practical and analytical skills and can lead on to many university courses (e.g. Physics, Engineering, Technology, Medicine).

Physicists can also pursue careers in law, business, accountancy and industry.

Dates and times

This course begins in September 2012. The duration of this course is one to two years.
