The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required by the sector and is nationally recognised by employers. The HNC course is designed to allow direct progression in to employment as well as providing a progression route to professional qualifications such as those offered by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Course content

This course is a two year part-time HNC requiring attendance at Bromley College for one full day a week.

The course requires you to complete a total of eight units over the two years. Units covered are: Year 1

  • Design Principles and Application for Construction and the BE
  • Science and Materials for Construction and the BE
  • Health, safety and Welfare for Construction and the BE
  • Environmental Impact of Construction

Year 2

  • Group project in the Construction industry
  • Law and Contract for Construction and BE
  • Building Control Procedures and Legislation
  • Site Surveying Procedures for Construction and BE

Teaching and assessment

Students are taught in seminar sessions and assessment is by coursework, assignments and some exams. Assessment will vary from unit to unit. You will be told about the assessment method and dates for each unit at the start of the course.

Students will also undertake some group and project work.

The course is very demanding and students must be willing to take on a big commitment in terms of the amount and standard of the work required.

Entry requirements

A full Level 3 qualification or you must be aged over 21 and working in an appropriate job/role in the construction industry.

If progressing from National Certificate/Diploma an overall Merit is required. Applicants will preferably be working in the Construction industry or wishing to progress into construction management or a profession.

All applicants will be required to attend a College interview.

Progression

Most students use the HNC as a stepping stone to a degree course. A good set of grades will obviously give you the best chance of securing a place, you may even gain entry to year 2 of a degree if your marks are good enough.

Dates and times

The duration of the course is two years with attendance at college for one day per week as follows: Year 1 Students - Thursday Year 2 Students - Tuesday
