General information
This course is designed to provide a basic knowledge of various subjects relating to a range of Public Service sectors. This is a course for school leavers who want to work in the uniformed services.
You must have a commitment to developing your own personality, be committed, enthusiastic, energetic and have a keen interest in developing skills and techniques that will help you improve your chances of selection and career progression within the armed forces, emergency services (police, fire, ambulance), security and prison services.

General information

Course content
The course is split into two sections:
- Public Service units such as Public Service Careers, Expedition Skills, Teamwork
- Functional Skills - Maths, ICT and English
You will learn about the types of careers available within the Public Services, including the application and selection process. You will also learn about fitness requirements for the Public Services. Over the course's one year duration, you will study a range if areas including Land Navigation by Map and Compass, Public Service Skills, Adventurous Activities and Teamwork.
As part of the course you will also be able to enhance your skills in English, Maths and ICT.
Teaching and assessment
Continual assessment throughout the year and a number of assignments both written and practical. Students are required to complete a portfolio containing evidence of assignments, practical performance, presentations, group exercises and discussions.
Students are given plenty of help and direction from staff and are encouraged to undertake their own research and additional reading.
Entry requirements
- No formal qualifications are needed but an assessment in English and Maths is required
- Compulsory attendance at a Public Services Information Event
- Applicants must also attend a taster day which is usually at the beginning of July.
Additional course costs
There will be a cost for uniform which is to be confirmed. All additional trips and visits must be paid for prior to the event.
Progression
Students who have a good student profile throughout the year may have the opportunity to progress onto our Level 2 programme, whilst others may wish to apply for any of the Public Services.
