General information

This course is for people who want to develop basic skills in electronics and mechanical engineering and have no formal entry qualifications. This course will give students a good all-round grounding for a career or academic pursuit in electronics and mechanical engineering. It covers a wide range of skills that can be adapted for many specialist areas.

The Electronics units will develop skills in electronic circuit construction and testing using electronic equipment and tools along with skills and knowledge of electrical and electronic equipment servicing.

The Mechanical units will provide students with skills using lathes, drills, milling machines and hand tools.

Units of study include:

  • Health and Safety
  • Developing yourself
  • Level One Electronic Circuit Building
  • Working efficiently & effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Making components using hand tools & fitting techniques
  • Using lathes for turning operations
  • Maths & Science
  • CAD

There is also an essential module for functional skills in literacy, numeracy and IT.

Teaching and assessment

All units are assessed by task evidence collected within a portfolio and on completion of the necessary units qualification is awarded.

Entry requirements

Compulsory attendance at a College interview day with assessment in English, maths and technical skills.
