General information

The hairdressing advanced apprenticeship is available for learners aged 18-65 who are employed in the hair industry and who have previously completed the level 2 qualification. College attendance is on a day-release basis and assessment will take place in the workplace. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through salon sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching. On successful completion of this programme, learners will be classified as fully skilled hair technicians.

General information

The hairdressing advanced apprenticeship is available for learners aged 18-65 who are employed in the hair industry and who have previously completed the level 2 qualification. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through salon sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching. On successful completion of this programme, learners will be classified as fully skilled hair technicians.

Course content

Training will take place one day a week and regular assessments and reviews will occur in the workplace. Learners will work toward an NVQ level 3 in Hairdressing plus level 2 Functional skills in Application of Number and Communication.

Nine units must be completed for the full level 3 Diploma (NVQ). Each candidate must complete the four mandatory units, plus five optional units to achieve a full qualification.

Mandatory units:

  • G22 Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • G18 Promote additional services or products to customers
  • G21 Provide hairdressing consultation services
  • GH16 Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques

Plus five of the following optional units:

  • GH17 Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • GH18 Provide colour correction services
  • GH19 Creatively style and dress hair
  • GH20 Creatively dress long hair
  • GH21 Develop and enhance your creative skills
  • GH23 Provide creative hair extensions (additional cost)

Teaching and assessment

All hairdressing programmes are assessed through a combination of the following: observation of practical work on clients for all units, on-line tests and oral questioning, workplace assessment and building a 'Portfolio of Evidence' to be submitted for assessment at the completion of the programme, or an individual unit as negotiated with your tutor.

Lessons will be a combination of taught theory lessons and practical lessons. The practical lessons will take place in fully equipped salons where the students will have demonstrations and the opportunity to develop their hairdressing skills in the required units. When skills are the required standard, students will be assess on clients. The theory classes prepare students for the tests they have to complete as part of the syllabus. Students will participate in group activities and individual study tasks.

Entry requirements

Learners wishing to start an advanced apprenticeship in hairdressing must have already completed the level 2 apprenticeship and be employed in the hair industry for a minimum of 30 hours a week. Learners are required to attend college one day a week.
