Who is the course for?

This module aims to introduce students to the initial concepts underlying the acquisition of mathematical knowledge and skills whilst also developing an awareness of the range of classroom strategies designed to promote this process, through an understanding of the role of adults in the learning environment. This aim will be encompassed within statutory frameworks and will be related to appropriate professional standards.

The Historical Context of Primary Mathematics, The Four Rules Curriculum, New Maths Movement, Nuffield Maths Project, Fletcher Maths, Political Influences, The Cockcroft Report, The National Curriculum and Ofsted, The Primary Strategy, The Primary National Framework, The current National Documentation.

TOPIC 2
Mental Maths, National Numeracy Strategy (N.N.S.)-1999, Summary of Mental Maths, Recent Influential Research, including Valdez, Reilly and Waterhouse (2008), Recent influential Writing Relating to Mental Maths including Chinn(2004), Learning Theories Relating to Mental Maths-such as Piaget, Bruner, Vygotsky , Hoyles, Harel , Freudenthal , Wilesky and Lave.

TOPIC 3
Maths Outside the Classroom, Field Trips, The Local Environment, At Home.

TOPIC 4
Influences on Maths Learning, Teaching Assistants, Anxiety, Gender, Resources, requirements of EAL learners.

TOPIC 5
Teaching and Learning to Count, The Five Principles of Counting (Gelman and Gallistel), Planning to Teach Counting Skills, Implementing Learning activities to secure progression.

TOPIC 6
Teaching and Learning Number, Place Value including Dienes and Gattegno, Money, Vulgar Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Proportion and Ratio.

TOPIC 7
Teaching and Learning Number Facts, Number Patterns, Bonds, Tables, Odd, Even, Square and Triangular Numbers, Multiples, Factors and Primes.

TOPIC 8
Teaching and Learning Calculation, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division.

How will the course be delivered?

Through classroom based activities, alongside a tutor and other delegates at a similar level.

Course Entry Criteria

Desirable but not essential Level 2 in Numeracy or GCSE grade D or above.

The college operates a no refunds policy as detailed below. Cancellations and transfer requests are subject to the following conditions:

  • More than 4 weeks notice – no charge
  • 4 weeks notice – 30% of the cost
  • 2-3 weeks notice – 50% of the cost
  • 1-2 weeks notice – 75% of the cost
  • Less than 1 weeks notice – 100% of the cost

All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a £10 administration charge. The full fee’s policy is available on request.

What will I get at the end of the course?

You will receive a Blackburn College Certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the training.
