Overview
This is a short course approved by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) is the new minimum requirement for people who wish to teach in post-16 education. PTLLS is the first step to a full teacherqualification (QTLS)
This is a short course designed as a basic introduction to teaching or training in the Lifelong Learning Sector. It introduces you to how to plan and deliver sessions, theories of learning, assessment strategies, working with individuals and groups and many aspects of teaching and learning in this exciting and diverse sector. It is a nationally recognised award which stands independently but is also an introductory module for those who may choose to continue to develop this as a career.
Our PTLLS course is set at Level 4 which is an Introductory Higher Education level. You should be aware that PTLLS courses at other institutions might be set at lower levels and will require a longer period of further study upon completion of the course should you wish to progress with your teaching qualification.
For those starting the course in the Academic year 2013/14, the course will be charged at £500. This amount will be payable at enrolment. You can join the course throughout the year and won’t be confined to traditional September startdates. Our next entry point is September 2013.
What Will I Study?
The programme is presented through a variety of methods, to allow you to experience different styles of teaching and learning. In the module you will learn how to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate learners and learning. You will explore educational theory, reflect on your practice and keep a diary of your own development. You will be introduced to principles of learning and theorists and will have the opportunity to present to your peers, evaluate your own effectiveness and give feedback to others.
Entry Requirements
You’ll need a recognised level 3 qualification in a vocational area (if applicable) which will then enable you, if you wish to go on to teach, to have a specialism in a particular area.
You’ll also need a level 2 qualification in literacy or numeracy, (or completion of an initial diagnostic test.)
We expect you to have a keen interest in teaching and learning, in the Lifelong Learning sector and we interview all applicants.

Modules
This is a single module which carries 20 credits at Undergraduate Level. Be aware that other insitutions have PTLLS qualifications that might have a lower credit value than our own. Successful achievement will award the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Qualification at level 4. This module will be accredited towards further awards, for those who are teaching or training in the Lifelong Learning sector.
How will I be assessed
You’ll be assessed by two written essays, a one hour (class-based) teaching practice portfolio, two observations by an experienced teacher, a group presentation and the production of a learning journal.
Where Next?
This award is an independent initial award and it can be used to build up to further qualifications.
If you are in a position to progress to higher levels of teaching qualifications your tutor will discuss other teaching qualifications with the Lifelong Learning Sector with you.
