Who is the course for?

This module develops students’ knowledge of calculating costs associated with products and services. It also introduces them to the fundamental concepts of project planning and scheduling. The module will also demonstrate the usefulness of a personal Professional Development Portfolio. Students will compile and maintain their own PDP. In addition this module is designed to help the student to explore the ethical, professional and legal issues relating to the use of technology. It provides an insight into the human issues involved in teamwork and working in complex environments.

What will I study?

Select and apply costing systems and techniques
• identify and describe appropriate costing systems and techniques for specific engineering business functions
• measure and evaluate the impact of changing activity levels on engineering business performance


Analyse the key functions of financial planning and control
• explain the financial planning process
• describe the factors influencing the decision-making process during financial planning
• examine the budgetary planning process and its application to financial planning decisions
• apply standard costing techniques and analyse deviation from planned outcomes.


Apply basic project planning and scheduling methods to a specified project
• establish the project resources and requirements
• produce a plan with appropriate timescales for completing the project
• identify human resource needs
• identify approximate costs associated with each stage of the project.


Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical considerations relating to technology
• Consider a small selection of realistic ethical dilemmas and devise practical strategies for handling them
• Consider alternative personal value systems and report on their effects on businesses
• Consider student’s own personal values and their likely effect on employer’s business


Demonstrate an understanding of the professional issues relating to technology
• Report considering the issues relating to a given scenario


Investigate legal context of technology
• Discuss issues relating to given case study


Understanding of human motivation & teamwork
• Discussion of issues arising in selected scenario.


Assessment Outcomes:
At the end of these modules the student should be able to demonstrate a practical capacity to carry out the tasks listed to a commercially acceptable standard, applying principles correctly in context but may not yet have developed a deep understanding of the theoretical underpinning of the subject. Optional assessments are included.

How will the course be delivered?

The course runs for a maximum of 1 week – 9am until 7pm.

Course Entry Requirements

It is essential that all attendees:

  1. Are competent with maths (No lower than GCSE Grade C)
  2. Have a good level of written and spoken English
  3. Have some understanding/experience of underlying concepts of engineering

The college operates a no refunds policy as detailed below. Cancellations and transfer requests are subject to the following conditions:

  • More than 4 weeks notice – no charge
  • 4 weeks notice – 30% of the cost
  • 2-3 weeks notice – 50% of the cost
  • 1-2 weeks notice – 75% of the cost
  • Less than 1 weeks notice – 100% of the cost

All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a £10 administration charge. The full fee’s policy is available on request.
